Mullins Defends Shot Put Title At #HLTF Championships

Sophomore Lyla Mullins won her second Horizon League title in the shot put.
ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (5/9/2026) -- Sophomore Lyla Mullins defended her indoor shot put title, and junior Alaina Burns scored in the steeplechase as the University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team put in some outstanding performances in day two of the Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. 

Those two helped the Titans raise their point total to 13 for eighth place at the league meet, hosted by Oakland.

Mullins extended her school record with a winning throw of 15.42 meters, which ranks in the top 50 in the NCAA East Region. She is also the second Titan in school history to win the shot put during indoors and outdoors in the same year, joining Altramese Roberts, who accomplished it in 1999 and 2001.

Burns claimed eighth in the steeplechase for a point with a career-best time of 11:24.55, sixth in school history.

The Titans also saw junior Gabriela Gashaj advance to the championship 400-meter hurdles as she was sixth in the preliminaries with a season-best 1:04.70. Freshman Imani Sharp moved to the finals of the 100 meters, taking fourth in the prelims in 12.04, while graduate senior Abby Winkle moved to the championship round of the 400m as she was sixth in the prelims with a time of 57.84.

The final day of the #HLTF Championships will start at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
