NOTRE DAME, Ind. (12/2/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team kicked off the 2016-17 indoor season Friday night at Notre Dame's Blue and Gold Invite with several standout performers.
The non-scored meet gave the Titans some early work to prepare for the bulk of the upcoming season, with many performances to highlight the meet.
In the 60-meter hurdles,
Ilia Panev won the first heat in 8.59 and
Jacob Whitting won heat two with a time of 8.57. Whitting would later win the 60-meter hurdles with a PR of 8.47, while Panev would take fifth in 8.96.
Whitting nearly matched his PR in the long jump, clearing 20'0" (6.10 meters).
Anton Webster set the third-best mark in Titan history with a time of 1:20.71 in the 600-meter run, good for second in the event.
Nathaniel Nunez set a PR of 1:27.98 in the event as he finished sixth.
Carlton Sims took eighth in the 400-meter with a time of 49.94, while
Zach Arnold clocked in at 50.76.
Joe Harmon checked in at 53.81 to round out the event.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Arnold, Panev, Webster and Sims clocked in at 3:26.01 for fifth place.
Nick Scalzi took 12
th in the weight throw with a toss of 13.57 meters, followed by Leduc with a toss of 12.65 meters. Scalzi added a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 14.96 meters. Leduc added a throw of 11.74 meters in the event.
In the mile,
Greg Ingle led the Titans with a fifth-place finish in 4:35.55.
Scott Smith followed in 4:39.04 and
Cody Smith clocked in at 4:57.86.
Harmon led Detroit Mercy in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.01, followed by
Michael Nelson in 24.30.
The Titans will take a bit of a break before returning to action in 2017 on January 14 at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
