Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Titans Nipped In Snowy Saturday Affair

DETROIT (4/2/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team outshot Siena by double digits in the fourth period, but the Titans just could not get the equalizer as UDM dropped a heartbreaker, 7-6, to the Saints on a snowy Saturday afternoon on Titan Field.

Senior Andy Hebden and sophomore Alec Gilhooly each had two goals, while sophomore Charlie Hayes and freshman Patrick Walsh each tallied their first collegiate goal.

Senior Connor Flynn started and made eight saves in net, and junior Jason Weber played the last 30 minutes posting six saves. Junior Ben Gjokaj was 8-of-16 on faceoffs and junior Kyle Beauregard picked up a season and team-high five ground balls.

It was a dogfight right from the start as the game was tied 2-2 after one and 4-4 at the half.

Detroit (1-7, 1-1 MAAC) was down 7-6 entering the fourth period and had numerous chances to tie it up. The Titans had a possession of two minutes early in the period unleashing four shots and then another possession lasting a little more than two minutes where they registered six shots and had a man-up opportunity.

The defense kept Detroit knocking on the doorstep coming up with four turnovers and Weber made three saves, helping to give UDM one more opportunity to even it up. After a caused turnover by Hayes with less than a minute remaining, the Titans called timeout and set up one final play, but junior Kyle Beauregard's shot was wide and sophomore Sean Birney's was saved with four seconds left.

The Titans were disciplined and were called for just one penalty on the day. Detroit outshot the Saints, 42-30, and won the battle for ground balls, 34-24. UDM was also a perfect 17-of-17 in the clearing game and 2-for-4 with the man advantage.

Senior Paul Bitetti and redshirt freshman Austin Polson-McCannon each tallied a pair of caused turnovers and Hebden and sophomore Pat Masterson picked up four ground balls apiece.

Detroit got on the board first as Hebden beat the keeper just three minutes into the contest. After two goals from Siena (2-6, 1-2 MAAC), sophomore Adam Susalla fed Gilhooly and he squared things at 2-2 late in the period.

The Saints jumped ahead 4-2 in the second, but the red, white and blue came right back as sophomore Mark Anstead located Hayes for his first career marker at the 4:55 mark and Gilhooly netted a man-up goal with 1:28 on the clock.

Detroit took the lead 5-4 in the third on Walsh's first career goal and the Titans last strike came with 4:48 remaining with Hebden scoring on the extra man to make it a 7-6 contest.

The Titans will return to action next Sunday, April 10, when they host Quinnipiac at 10:30 a.m. on Titan Field.

Game Notes:
