All-American JUCO Guard Dre Black Signs With Detroit

DETROIT (5/18/2016) -- Another winning player from a winning program committed his allegiance to the University of Detroit Mercy as head men's basketball coach Bacari Alexander '99 announced the signing of junior college transfer Dre Black (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) from Schoolcraft Community College.

Black will have two years of eligibility wearing the red, white and blue. He will have a signing ceremony at 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday night (May 18) at Schoolcraft College.

"Dre is a true point guard who has led his team to two-straight national tournament appearances at Schoolcraft College playing for coach Abe Mashhour," said coach Alexander. "One of our positions that needed to be addressed immediately was our point guard play and Dre allows us to solidify that approach."

Black – a 6-2, 175-lb guard – is coming off a season in which he was named a NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball First Team All-American. He guided Schoolcraft to a 23-12 overall record and 14-2 mark in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Eastern Conference. The Ocelots began the year ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA coaches' poll and ended up winning the Eastern Conference title, the MCCAA and NJCAA District 10 Championship for the second-straight season, while advancing to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA National Tournament.

Black started all 35 games and averaged 10.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.7 steals. He shot 43.4 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from behind the arc and 82.1 percent at the free throw line. He also posted a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover (201-A, 100-T) ratio. He netted double digits in 17 games and finished his junior college career with a career-high 21 against Parkland College in the national tournament. He also had three games with double-digit assists.

As a freshman, Black tallied 7.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 36 games, helping his team to a 31-5 record, 15-1 conference mark and a No. 1 national ranking, while finishing sixth in the NJCAA national tournament. He played high school with Westland John Glenn and helped the team reach the KLAA Kensington Conference championship as a senior.

Detroit Mercy will host its fifth athletic luncheon of the 2015-16 season on Wednesday, May 25. The event will take place in the Ed & Brooks Room inside historic Calihan Hall at Noon. The event is free, however if interested in attending, participants need to RSVP by Monday, May 23, to Director of Marketing & Promotions Jeremiah Hergott at (313) 993-1700 ext. 7330 or hergotjw@udmercy.edu
