DETROIT (7/29/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's cross country and track and field rosters are now set for the 2016-17 season as the Titans will welcome 11 newcomers to the program.
The class includes seven individuals who will run cross country and track and field in
Adam Fraeyman (Romeo, Mich./Romeo),
Greg Ingle (Mason, Mich./Mason/Lansing CC),
James McCann (Holland, Mich./Black River),
Brendan McClanahan (Temperance, Mich./Bedford),
Santana Scott (Evart, Mich./Evart),
Scott Smith (Milford, Mich./Catholic Central) and
Jake Williams (Lake Ann, Mich./Benzie Central), while the final four individuals will just suit up for track and field in
Cody Ball (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview), Dayton Munce (Williamston, Mich./Williamston), Michael Nelson (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) and
Darrius Scott (Detroit, Mich./Chandler Park).
"This is a good class and kind of the next generation for the distance group that will attempt to fill the Horizon League Champion runners that graduated from the cross country team," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Guy Murray '89. "We didn't quite fill all the holes in the roster, but a bit of recruiting is finding the best student-athletes that fit the University of Detroit Mercy and build the team to its strengths."
Ingle is the lone junior college transfer that will have three years of eligibility in track and field and two in cross country. He was a NJCAA cross country qualifier as a freshman and sophomore and was also a 10,000-meter qualifier in track this past spring. A marathon runner, he has taken part in three events clocking a 2:57:50 time in the 2013 Glass City Marathon, a 2:49:31 in the 2014 Boston Marathon and a 2:58.44 in the 2016 Charlevoix Marathon.
Fraeyman was a 2014 and 2015 Division 1 state qualifier in cross country. The standout harrier was the 2015 Macomb County cross country champion and a 1,600-meter regional champion in 2016.
McCann was tabbed All-State in cross country in Division 3 as a junior and senior, earning silver medalist in 2015. He was also a state qualifier as a sophomore as well as a state qualifier in the 3,200-meter in 2014 and 2015.
McClanahan was All-State in the 800-meters as a senior taking eighth place in the Division 1 race. He also claimed fourth in the 800m at the 2016 MITS and was a state qualifier as a junior. In cross country, he was a state qualifier as a junior and senior.
Santana Scott was Division 4 All-State in cross country as a sophomore, junior and senior. He was runner-up in the state championships in 2014 and then won the D4 title in 2015. In track, he was All-State in the 3,200m and 1,600m as a junior and senior, winning both events in 2016. In 2015, he was runner-up in the 3,200m and fourth in the 1,600m and that was after winning a regional championship in both races in 2014.
Smith was a Division 1 state qualifier in cross country as a junior and senior. He was also a medalist at the 2015 CHSL AB 1,600m in 2015 and the 1,600m at the CHSL AB and Oakland County in 2014.
Williams was a three-time state qualifier in cross country in Division 3, helping his team win a title as a sophomore and junior and a runner-up effort as a senior. He was also All-State as a junior and senior. In track, he twice All-State in the 4x800-meter relay helping the quartet to a pair of fourth-place finishes. He took sixth and was All-State in the 1,600m as a junior and was a state qualifier as a senior.
Ball will be a member of the multi-athletes on the track team competing in combined events. He comes to Detroit Mercy as a state qualifier in the pole vault as a senior.
Munce also competes in the pole vault, who placed fourth in Michigan Division 2 to earn All-State.
Nelson was part of the All-State 4x400-meter relay squad that took fifth in Division 1 in 2015 and was the 200-meter medalist in Oakland County in 2016. He was also a state qualifier in the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relay as a junior and the 4x100 and 4x400m as a senior.
Darrius Scott was a Division 3 regional champion in the 200, 4x100m and 4x400m as a junior. He earned All-State on the 4x200m and the quartet also won a regional championship in 2014.
The 2016 cross country team will start the season at the golden Grizzly Open on Sept. 2, with the indoor track and field season opening in December.
