DETROIT (10/1/2025) -- The calendar has turned to October, and the Titans are ready to keep their positive momentum as the University of Detroit Mercy will head a bit south for the 24th Annual Swags Louisville Cross Country Classic.
The men will run in the 8k Gold Race at 9:00 a.m., and the women will compete in the 6k Blue Race, set to start at 11:00 a.m., at EP "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
UDM has participated in the event every year since 2007, except during the 2020 pandemic season.
Both teams have competed in two events so far. The men started the year with three top-10 runners at Oakland's Golden Grizzly Open and then saw two runners post top-10 times in school history at Notre Dame's National Catholic Invitational.
Senior Joshua Otten was runner-up at Oakland and then clocked the second fastest 8k time in school history with a 24:25 at Notre Dame, while freshman Colin Murray was fifth in his debut at OU and then recorded a Titan rookie record 24:44 at UND.
For the women, senior Nina Pizzo started the campaign with a silver performance at Oakland and then tallied the 10th-best 5k time in school history of 18:20 at Notre Dame. Senior Claire Hunt and junior Helana Napiorkowski were also top 10 in the season opener, while senior Ayva Schmalz was top 50 at UND with a time of 19:36.
Last year, Otten earned fifth in 24:48, becoming just the third Titan to register a top-five finish at Louisville, while Pizzo was 20th in a time of 18:47.
In 2022, Allison Sherman '24 led the team to a fourth-place finish in the Silver Race, winning the event in a time of 18:09, one of the top 10 runs in school history at the time. The women have had two other top-10 runners at the event as Louisa Coppola '14 was third in 2013 and Sydnie Fetherolf '18 claimed fourth in 2017. The team also placed fourth in 2007 and seventh in 2017.
Patrick Liederbach '11 and Ben Kendell '18 took fourth in 2010 and 2015, respectively, while Kendall was also fifth in 2018. The men have had a pair of fourth-place team efforts in 2015 and 2019, a sixth-place finish in 2010, and 10th in 2011.
