#TitanTop10 – Detroit Mercy Gives Back To The Community

DETROIT (7/5/2016) -- From July 4-15, DetroitTitans.com will release the Top 10 Moments of 2015-16 as voted on by members of the Detroit Mercy athletic staff. Each day, a new moment will be posted on DetroitTitans.com as well as on all the Titan social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).

At No. 9 is the great work away from the competition venue by the Detroit Mercy student-athletes, coaches and staff as the Titans took part in a number of community service initiatives in 2015-16.

The women's soccer team was at the top of the list for community service and earned the Community Service Award at the annual Academic & Athletic Awards. In January, the Titans embarked on a Coat Drive and distributed more than 40 coats to those in need during the Michigan winter. The team then hosted the Second Annual "Give Cancer the Boot" in April, a 3x3 soccer tournament that raised more than $2,000 for the Leukemia Research Foundation in honor of Alayna Zalac.

The men's and women's basketball teams were both involved in campaigns to help out the community of Flint, helping raise money, while collecting water to hand out to those affected by the water crisis. Both teams then made their way to Flint to help distribute water to the community. Both teams were also involved with Team IMPACT, an organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. Team IMPACT children are drafted onto college athletic teams, local to where they live, and to the greatest extent possible, become a member of the team from Draft Day through to Graduation.

The men's golf team was at Palmer Park during the fall for the First Tee program in the Greater Detroit Area. The First Tee is a youth development organization founded in 1997 to mentor and develop children through the teaching of golf. It has engaged 17,000 volunteers to reach nine million children since its inception. The mission of The First Tee is "to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf."

The men's lacrosse team volunteered at the Angels' Place Family Fun Day at Marian High School for the fourth-straight year, while the women's lacrosse team spent some time volunteering with the 14th Annual Tour de Troit and donating money to help with the Flint Water Crisis.

A number of Titan teams also volunteered at Detroit Mercy Freshmen Move-In Day, National Girls and Women in Sports Day and Metro Detroit Youth Day. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was also busy with a number of projects including the Sandwich Bus and blanket drive.

Those were just some of the many community service projects that Detroit Mercy student-athletes, coaches and staff completed in 2015-16.
