Titans Begin Season at Blue and Gold Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (12/1/17) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team kicked off the 2017-18 indoor season Friday night at Notre Dame's Blue and Gold Invite with several solid performers.
 
The non-scored meet gave the Titans some early work to prepare for the bulk of the upcoming season, with many performances to highlight the meet.

In the 200-meter dash, making their collegiate debuts, Sheldon Clark and Justin Koch crossed the line at the 24.14 and 24.69 marks, respectively.

The 400-meter dash saw Zach Arnold place seventh in the heat with a time of 50.09. Sheldon Clark also participated in the event, recording a time of 55.13.

Andrew Heitzhaus placed fourth in the 600-meter run, with a time of 1:24.44 missing first place by a mere two seconds. However, his time was fast enough to record a new personal record, beating his old by over a second. 

The 800-meter run saw Alan Nava take fourth place, crossing the line with a time of 2:02.75, a personal record for Nava.  

The one mile run was dominated by the Titans, as senior Ben Kendell crossed the line at the 4:13.99 mark, earning him first place. Following closely behind him were Thomas Mueller, Adam Fraeyman and Greg Ingle, at 4:28.43, 4:33.13 and 4:41.78, respectively. Those times earned the runners fifth, sixth and seventh place. Fraeyman's time earned him a new personal record.

Phillip Robie made his collegiate debut in the 60-meter hurdles, earning eleventh place with a time of 9:54. Justin Koch also placed in the 60-meter hurdles, earning fourteenth with a mark of 12:48.

The red, white and blue placed sixth in the 4x400 meter relay, crossing the line at 3:29.35. The race featured Arnold, Heitzhaus, Brendan McClanahan and Robie.

Joseph Lietzow made his collegiate debut in the high jump, earning sixth place by jumping 6'00.75". Right behind Leitzow was Robie, who jumped 5'10.74".

Robie also participated in the long jump, earning eighth place with a mark of 6.63m. Also featuring in the long jump for the Titans was Jacob Whitting with a jump of 6.22m. Closely behind Whitting was Lietzow with a distance of 5.85m.

Nicholas Scalzi took tenth place in the shot put with a distance of 13.52m. Scalzi also placed tenth in the men's weight throw, with a distance of 14.13m.
