ALLENDALE, Mich. (2/10/17) – Junior
Ben Kendell of the University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team broke another record of his own, this time in the 5,000m, while taking first place from the Big Meet at Grand Valley State University on Friday night.
Kendell lowered his all-time Titan record in the event to 14:10.10, shaving more than seven seconds off of his previous best. The mark earned Kendell the gold medal in a field of more than 180 competitors.
The mark is the fastest in the Horizon League by nearly 30 seconds during the current indoor season. The time is the fastest indoor 5,000m in the Horizon League since Callum Hawkins recorded a time of 14:03.37 at the Husky Classic for Butler in February of 2012.
Kendell has topped two of his Titan records already this season. He also lowered his 3,000m record last weekend at the YSU National Invitational.
The rest of the Titans are currently competing in the Windsor Team Challenge, which wraps up on Saturday night. Following this weekend's competition, Detroit Mercy heads back to Grand Valley State next weekend for GVSU's Tune-Up on Feb. 17.
