Women's Basketball Hosts Norse on Thursday

DETROIT (1/2/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team returns home for a pair of home Horizon League contests, beginning with Thursday's game against Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m. from Calihan Hall.

The game is set to be streamed live on ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN Applications with Denny Kapp calling all of the action.

Detroit Mercy will honor guard Nicole Urbanick prior to Thursday's contest as the senior surpassed the 1,000-point milestone in her Titan career during last week's game at Cleveland State.

Senior guard Nicole Urbanick became the 22nd player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau in a career, scoring 12 points at Cleveland State on Dec. 30. She reached the milestone on a tough, left-handed lay-up with 6:20 left in the fourth quarter against the Vikings. Urbanick is the third Titan in the past three seasons to go past the 1,000-point plateau.

Detroit Mercy has gone 3-1 against Northern Kentucky since the program joined the Horizon League prior to the 2015-16 school year. The Titans won both meetings with the Norse last season, winning a 57-49 contest at home on Jan. 16 before earning a 55-53 win at NKU on Jan. 29.

Sophomore guard Zoey Oatis had the best game of her young Titan career in the league opener at Youngstown State on Dec. 28, scoring a career-best 22 points on 8-of-8 shooting. Oatis scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half and also totaled a career-best seven rebounds (six on the offensive end).

Last Time Out
Senior guard Nicole Urbanick became the 22nd player in school history to reach 1,000 career points, tallying 12 points to surpass the milestone in Saturday's 75-50 loss at Cleveland State.

Urbanick surpassed the milestone with 6:20 left in the fourth quarter, driving to the rim and finishing on a tough left-handed lay-up with a CSU defender in her face. Urbanick, who was playing in career game No. 100 for the Titans, had eight first-half points, drilling two 3-pointers. She hit a jumper in the third quarter for career points No. 998 and 999 before surpassing the milestone with her lay-up in the final stanza.

Three Titans were in double figures on the day with sophomore Anja Marinkovic hitting four 3-pointers for 12 points. Senior forward Brianne Cohen nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. It was her 11th double-figure scoring effort for the Titans in 13 games this season.

Detroit Mercy hit nine 3-pointers in the game. Sophomore Ashley Miller added six boards and a career-best five assists for the Titans.

Scouting Northern Kentucky
The Norse secured a win over nationally-ranked Green Bay in their last outing, topping the #19/20 Phoenix at home by a 62-54 margin on Dec. 30. Northern Kentucky scored just two points in the third quarter of Saturday's win over Green Bay, but used a 26-point outburst in the final stanza to help seal the victory. Three NKU players were in double figures led by Taryn Taugher's 17 points off the bench.

Overall on the year, sophomore Molly Glick leads the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game and also leads the team in 3-pointers made (23). She is shooting a Horizon League-best 90-percent from the foul line.

Freshmen Samari Mowbray and Kailey Coffey contribute 9.7 points and 8.0 points per game, respectively, while another freshman, Grace White, was named the HL Freshman of the Week on Monday after her 15-point, eight rebound performance vs. Milwaukee.

All-Time Series
The Titans and Norse have met four times during the past two seasons with Detroit Mercy holding a 3-1 series advantage over NKU. The Titans are 2-0 at home against the Norse.

Detroit Mercy won both meetings last season with the Norse, earning a 57-49 victory at home before edging NKU on the road, 55-53, on Jan. 29, 2017.

Brianne Cohen scored 26 points (12-of-13 FG) in last year's road game, while Nicole Urbanick hit five treys and scored 20 points in the home contest in 2016-17.

Urbanick Hits 1,000-Point Milestone
Titan senior sharp-shooter Nicole Urbanick became the 22nd played in school history to surpass 1,000 career points, hitting the milestone with a lay-up in the fourth quarter at Cleveland State on Dec. 30. Urbanick scored 12 points in the game and went past the mark with her final bucket of the afternoon.

Urbanick just recently moved into third place in 3-pointers made and was the fourth Titan in school history to sink 200 career treys. She has 208 triples in her Titan career and is 23 off the all-time mark for 3-pointers made in a career, held by former Titan standout Senee Shearer (231 career treys).

Among her 1,001 points, Urbanick has 624 points via 3-pointers, 268 by 2-point field goals and 109 from the free throw line.

Urbanick, who led the Horizon League in 3-pointers made per game (2.77) as a sophomore and hit 72 last season, played in career game 100 on Dec. 30.
