DETROIT (11/3/2018) -- Sophomore forward
Lexey Tobel scored the game-winning bucket with 1.5 seconds left to help lift the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team to a 58-56 exhibition victory over crosstown foe Wayne State on Saturday. The contest was part of the third annual City College Series, which benefits Detroit Public Schools, K-5.
Tobel, who scored a game-high 21 points, received an inbounds pass with under 10 seconds left and then drove to the left and down the lane, finishing on a tough lay-up with just 1.5 seconds left. Wayne State wasn't able to get a last-second look to counter as the Titans earned the victory.
In addition to her 21 points, Tobel pulled down a team-best nine rebounds. Senior guard
Brittney Jackson added 13 points for the Titans, while juniors
Ashley Miller and
Zoey Oatis finished with eight and seven points, respectively, for Detroit Mercy.
Detroit Mercy and Wayne State were knotted 26-26 at the halftime break after Tobel sank a 3-pointer just before the second quarter buzzer. The Titans had a big third quarter, scoring 21 points to take a 47-39 lead over the visitors with 10 minutes left. Detroit Mercy had a lead as big as nine in the fourth, but WSU chipped away before sinking a 3-pointer to tie the game up, 56-56, with 6.6 seconds remaining.
The Titans had 10 steals in the game and 36 rebounds, including seven boards from Miller and six more from freshman
Paige Bellman. Freshman
Alex Burr and Jackson each had two steals.
Tobel was 7-of-7 from the free throw line and sank two triples as well. As a team, Detroit Mercy went 13-of-16 from the free throw line (81.3 percent).
