DETROIT (11/12/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team continues its four-game road stretch, visiting another old Horizon League rival in Butler from Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday. The game is set for a 7 p.m. ET tip and is slated to be streamed live via Butler's YouTube stream.
The Titans are 0-2 on the young 2019-20 season following a setback on the road against No. 17/21 Michigan State on Friday. Detroit Mercy opens the season with six of eight contests away from Detroit in the month of November. The red, white and blue are also on the road this weekend, visiting George Mason in Fairfax, Va.
On The Court:
- Detroit Mercy is led in scoring by Zoey Oatis (9.5 ppg), Markyia McCormick (8.0 ppg) and Maxine Moore (7.5 ppg). Oatis had a season-high 17 points in the opener against Loyola Chicago, while Moore tallied a career-best 13 points in the Titans' last game at MSU.
- Detroit Mercy holds a 34-27 series lead over its old Horizon League opponent. It's the 62nd meeting between the two programs. The Titans are 13-17 in Hinkle Fieldhouse.
- It's the first meeting between the two programs since the 2011-12 season, when the two squads were both part of the Horizon League. Detroit Mercy has won three of the last four meetings.
- The Titans are one of the younger teams in all of Division I with 10 players either freshmen or sophomores; Detroit Mercy has eight new players in 2019-20, including three transfers.
- Moore also leads the team in rebounding with 6.0 boards per game, pulling down nine boards in the opener against the Ramblers.
- Detroit Mercy is in its fifth season under head coach Bernard Scott and was picked to finish ninth in the Horizon League.
Scouting Butler:
- Butler is 1-0 on the season with a 74-58 home victory over Wagner on Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
- The Bulldogs are coming off a 23-10 season and an 11-7 campaign in the Big East. Butler reached the Sweet 16 of the WNIT tournament last season, defeating Northeastern and Toledo in the first two rounds. Butler went 14-4 at home last season.
- Three Bulldogs scored in double figures in the season opener, led by Kristen Spolyar's 17 points. Tenley Dowell added 12 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Spolyar was second on the team a season ago with 13.2 points per game.
- The Bulldogs had 18 steals in the season opener against Wagner and knocked down 25-of-31 free throws (80.6 percent). Butler out-rebounded the Seahawks, 38-28.
Last Time Out
Detroit Mercy dropped its first road contest of the season, falling at #17/21-Michigan State by a 110-52 margin on Friday night from the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich. Titan sophomore
Maxine Moore paced the squad with 13 points, while a trio of freshmen had bettern than eight points --
Annika Corcoran (nine points, 9-14 FT),
Sylare Starks (eight points) and
Markyia McCormick (eight points). Starks also sank two 3-pointers and had a team-high-tying two steals.
Detroit Mercy shot 32.6 percent from the floor (15-for-46) and went to the line 32 times, sinking 18 free throws. The Titans had six steals and two blocks.
Tough Non-Conference
Detroit Mercy has another strong non-conference schedule in 2019-20 with the Titans playing five tournament squads and four teams that had better than 20 victories a season ago. A look at the seven non-league opponents that finished with a better-than .500 record in 2018-19:
