DETROIT (1/24/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team closes out the first-half of the Horizon League schedule Saturday afternoon, playing in a 2 p.m. ET contest at Northern Kentucky from BB&T Arena in Highland Heights, Ohio. The Titans are coming off a good battle at Wright State on Thursday, falling 67-61 from the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. Detroit Mercy shot 40-percent from the floor and a season-high 83-percent from the free throw line and freshman guard
Sylare Starks (14 points) and sophomore forward
Maxine Moore (12 points) both scored in double figures on Thursday.
On The Court:
- Freshman guard Sylare Starks continues to lead the Titans in scoring at 10.2 points per game, a mark that leads all Horizon League freshmen.
- Freshman guard Annika Corcoran ranks third in the league with 29 assists across eight Horizon League games (3.6 assists per game).
- Detroit Mercy shot above 40-percent against Wright State, marking the eighth time this season the Titans have shot above that mark.
- The Titans also made 15-of-18 free throw shots for a season-high 83.3-percentage from the line against the Raiders.
- Starks was the 11th freshmen in Titan history to surpass 30, 3-point field goals in her rookie campaign with two 3-pointers at WSU.
- Senior Zoey Oatis ranks second in the Horizon League in steals per game (1.8) and ninth in the conference in offensive rebounding (2.0 per game).
- The Titans have earned three Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors from three different players -- Sylare Starks (Nov. 25), Bridgid Fox (Dec. 16) and Markyia McCormick (Dec. 23). It's the first time in league history that three different players from the same team have earned the Freshman of the Week honor in the same season.
- The Titan freshmen class has combined for 54-percent of the Titan scoring in 2019-20 as well as 25 double-figure scoring efforts.
- The Titans are 3-6 in nine career meetings with Northern Kentucky in the all-time series.
- The Titans are one of the youngest teams in NCAA Division I with 10 underclassmen (five freshmen, five sophomores) and holds an average age of 19.3Â on its roster.
- Head coach Bernard Scott is in his fifth season at the helm of the Titans and has led them to two top-four finishes and a Horizon League championship game in 2017.
- The red, white and blue are 2-6 in Horizon League play so far this season with wins coming at UIC and at home against Cleveland State last week.
Scouting Northern Kentucky:
- Northern Kentucky is 10-9 overall and 4-4 in Horizon League play this season after picking up a 69-60 win over Oakland at home on Thursday.
- The Norse also have league wins over UIC, Youngstown State and Milwaukee in the league season.
- Senior guard Molly Glick leads the squad in scoring at 12.1 points per game, while sophomore guard Ally Niece is also averaging in double figures at 11.6 points per game, including scoring a game-high 22 against the Golden Grizzlies in her last outing.
- Junior forward Kailey Coffey leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 caroms per game and Niece leads the squad and all Horizon League players in assists at 3.9 per game.
- Freshman guard Ivy Turner leads the team in minutes played and ranks third on the squad in scoring (8.6 ppg).
Last Time Out
The Titans battled back-and-forth with Wright State all night Thursday in Dayton, holding the lead for most of the first half, but Detroit Mercy fell just short in a 67-61 setback from the Nutter Center. The Titans hit 40-percent of their shots in the game and also knocked down a season-high 83-percent of free throw shots (15-of-18).

Sylare Starks scored in double figures for the 12th time this season, scoring a team-high 14 points, while sophomore forward
Maxine Moore added 12 points for the Titans. Sophomore

The Titans are in the Detroit-area for the next two weekends, visiting Metro Series rival Oakland in Rochester next Saturday, Feb. 1 for a 3 p.m. contest with the Golden Grizzlies. Detroit Mercy then hosts a pair of games the following weekend with the Titans welcoming IUPUI and UIC on Thursday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 8, respectively.
