Women's Basketball Heads to Rival Oakland for Saturday #MetroSeries Clash

DETROIT (1/30/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team opens the second-half of the Horizon League schedule Saturday afternoon, heading to nearby Oakland University for a 3 p.m. Metro Series battle against the Golden Grizzlies in Rochester. The game from the O'rena is slated to be broadcast live on ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN Applications.

A pregame party at Buddy's Pizza in Auburn Hills at 2612 Squirrel Road is set for 1:30 p.m. prior to the 3 p.m. tip-off in Rochester.

The Titans (2-7 Horizon League) are just one game behind the Golden Grizzlies (3-6 HL) in the Horizon League standings as the two team's enter the weekend. It's the opening of two-straight weekends for the Titans in Michigan, with Detroit Mercy hosting IUPUI (Thursday, Feb. 6) and UIC (Saturday, Feb. 8) from Calihan Hall next weekend.

On The Court:
  • Freshman guard Sylare Starks leads all #HLWBB freshmen and the Titans in scoring at 10.1 points per game; She has scored in double figures a team-high 12 times.
  • Sophomore forward Maxine Moore scored in double figures in both games last week, averaging 13.0 points per game, while shooting 71-percent from the floor.
  • Freshman guard Annika Corcoran ranks fifth among all players in league games in assists per game (3.4).
  • Senior Zoey Oatis ranks second in the Horizon League in steals per game (1.8) as well as second in total steals (36) for the Titans.
  • The Titans have earned three Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors from three different players -- Sylare Starks (Nov. 25), Bridgid Fox (Dec. 16) and Markyia McCormick (Dec. 23). It's the first time in league history that three different players from the same team have earned the Freshman of the Week honor in the same season.
  • The all-time series between the two squads is all squad, 15-15, in 30 career meetings in women's basketball.
  • The Titan freshmen class has combined for 54-percent of the Titan scoring in 2019-20 as well as 27 double-figure scoring efforts.
  • The Titans had seven blocks in their last game against NKU, with seven different players totaling blocks. It was the most in a single game since the Titans had eight on Nov. 6, 2018.
  • Starks was the fastest Titan to 200 career points (20 games) since the 2014-15 season, when Darianne Seward reached the mark in 18 contests.
  • The Titans are one of the youngest teams in NCAA Division I with 10 underclassmen (five freshmen, five sophomores) and holds an average age of 19.3 on its roster.
  • Head coach Bernard Scott is in his fifth season at the helm of the Titans and has led them to two top-four finishes and a Horizon League championship game in 2017.
  • The red, white and blue are 2-6 in Horizon League play so far this season with wins coming at UIC and at home against Cleveland State last week.
Scouting Oakland:
  • Oakland is 8-12 overall and 3-6 in the Horizon League, just one game ahead of the Titans in the league standings.
  • The Golden Grizzlies are 4-4 in home games this season and are currently on a four-game losing streak after beginning the league slate 3-2.
  • Oakland won over the Titans, Green Bay and Milwaukee, all at home, earlier in the Horizon League season.
  • Jalisha Terry leads the squad in scoring at 12.1 points per game with Kahlaijah Dean also averaging in double figures at 11.9 points per game.
  • Chloe Guingrich is pacing the team in rebounding (7.3 caroms per game), while Terry is the team leader in assists with 62 or 3.1 per game.
  • OU is second in the league in free throw percentage (75.2) and third in the Horizon League in assists per game (14.3) as a team.
Last Time Out
Three Titans scored in double figures and Detroit Mercy battled throughout, but fell in the final minutes of a 72-60 road loss at Northern Kentucky on Jan. 25 from Highland Heights, Ky. and BB&T Arena. Sophomore forward Maxine Moore led Detroit Mercy with 14 points and seven rebounds, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor.

Freshmen guards Annika Corcoran and Markyia McCormick added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the red, white and blue. Corcoran made 2-of-3 triples. Senior Zoey Oatis added six rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Titans, which had a season-high seven blocks -- by seven different individuals. Moore was in double figures for the eighth time in 2019-20.

Detroit Mercy returns to play next weekend, hosting IUPUI on Thursday, Feb. 6 from Calihan Hall at 7 p.m. ET. The Titans will host their Pink Game on Thursday before hosting National Girls & Women in Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 8 when the red, white and blue welcoming UIC to Calihan Hall for a 1 p.m. tip.
