Women's Lacrosse Hosts Arizona State in Home Opener Friday

DETROIT (2/11/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team opens its home schedule Friday afternoon, hosting Arizona State in a 1 p.m. ET contest from Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac. It's the second game overall in the 2020 season after the Titans opened the season last Friday at No. 3-ranked Northwestern.

There is no live stream available for the game, but live statistics will be utilized for the non-conference contest. It's the first meeting in women's lacrosse between the two schools.

The Titans (0-1) play two of their next three games at Ultimate Soccer Arenas with the red, white and blue hosting old ASUN foe Jacksonville on Sunday, Feb. 23 in a 12:30 p.m. game. Detroit Mercy hits the road next week as well, playing at Butler in Indianapolis on Thursday, Feb. 20.

On The Field:
  • The Titans fell in their 2020 season opener at No. 3-ranked Northwestern on Feb. 7. It was the highest-ranked team the Titans have ever played in women's lacrosse.
  • Sophomore midfielder Taryn McManus scored on both of her shots at NU, scoring two of the three Titan goals. Junior attacker Kamryn Corraro, who had 33 goals last season for the Titans, scored the other goal late in the game for the Titans and had a team-high four shots on goal.
  • Midfielder Taylor Cantelon had a career-high five draw controls, while sophomores Elise Harder and Emily Beazley each had three draw controls in the 2020 opener.
  • The Titans put nine of 11 shots on net (81.8 percent) in their first game of the year and had 12 draw controls overall.
  • Six Detroit Mercy players made their collegiate debuts at Northwestern -- Marina Butler, Annie Gilbert, Heather Keery, Caitlin O'Brien, Kate Schmidt and Hannah Shrader.
  • Butler notched her first collegiate point in her first game, assisting on Taryn McManus' second goal of the contest against the Wildcats.
  • Titan junior goalkeeper Maddie Johnson made her first start in net at Northwestern and turned away six shots, while Shrader also saw time in goal and had two saves.
  • The Titans are looking for their first win against a member of the Pac-12, having played Cal two times previously as well as Oregon once (two of the three games decided by four goals or less).
  • Detroit Mercy is entering its second season under head coach and alum Megan Callahan '13, who is in her fourth year on the Titan women's lacrosse staff overall.
  • The Titans have earned a share of the Southern Conference regular-season title in each year of women's lacrosse in the league and are 8-2 in the SoCon across two seasons.
  • The red, white and blue were picked to finish in fourth place in the 2020 SoCon preseason coaches poll, voted on by the league's head coaches.
  • Detroit Mercy is entering its 12th year as a women's lacrosse program overall and was the first Division I program in the state of Michigan.
Scouting Arizona State:
  • Arizona State used a 6-2 run in the second half to pull away from UC Davis in a 16-12 season-opening victory on Saturday, Feb. 8.
  • Senior attacker Kerri Clayton -- who has 81 goals in her Arizona State career -- tallied six points (four goals, two assists) in the season-opening win.
  • Junior attacker Emily Glagolev and senior attacker Carley Adams each added hat tricks in the season opener for the Sun Devils.
  • ASU was out-shot in the first game, 26-25, but had a 64.0 percent shot percentage and put 20 of 25 shots on net.
  • Arizona State went 6-12 last season in its second year as a program and finished 2-8 in the Pac-12 conference.
  • The squad is entering its first season under head coach Tim McCormick, formerly an assistant coach at Northwestern.
