ORLANDO, Fla. (2/29/2020) -- Senior
Liz Murphy posted a complete-game victory and four Titans knocked in runs as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team defeated FIU in the first game of the Powerline Tournament in Florida on Saturday.
The win was the first for head coach
Marc Gillis.
Murphy went all seven innings scattering just six hits and three earned runs, while striking out six batters.
Junior
Alyssa Lang went 2-for-3 with a RBI and sophomore
McKenna Tanguay was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Freshman
Reese Ruhlman was 1-for-1 with two walks, a RBI and a run scored and senior
Jen Lorenz had a RBI double.
The Titans were down 1-0 in the bottom of the third when Tanguay started the inning with a single and Ruhlman drive her in with a double.
In the fourth, Lorenz led off by reaching on a hit by pitch. After a Lang single, Gauthier knocked in a run with a double for a 2-1 lead. Detroit Mercy added two more runs in the fifth with RBI doubles by Lorenz and Lang.
Detroit Mercy then had to hold on in the seventh as FIU had started the frame with a single and triple to cut the lead to 4-2. Murphy then had a batter fly out and retired another on a ground out, which scored a runner, but she struck out the final batter for the triumph.
The Titans dropped a 22-0 contest to No. 11 Kentucky in the afternoon. Tanguay had a hit in the game along with sophomores
Taryn Peru and
Piper Roth.
The red, white and blue will play two more games tomorrow with Albany at 8:00 a.m. and Loyola at 1:00 p.m.
