DETROIT (5/7/2020) -- All 17 University of Detroit Mercy athletic programs were above a 3.0 GPA during the 2020 spring semester as the Titans combined for a 3.51 GPA during the most recent semester as the 2019-20 school year comes to a close. It was the highest semester GPA for the athletic department in school history.
"Despite all of the drastic changes that have occurred during the past several months, our student-athletes utilized their resources, remained diligent in their studies, collaborated with their faculty members and focused on finishing strong," Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services
Holly Kerstner said. "This is the first time in the many years of working in intercollegiate athletics that all of the teams are above a 3.0 grade point average. I am beaming with Titan pride for their hard work and perseverance while adapting to the changes with their class instruction and the loss of their sport."
Most of the Detroit Mercy athletic teams (15 of 17) were above a 3.4 GPA during the spring semester, with the golf programs leading the way on in the classroom as women's golf had a department-high 3.76, followed closely by men's golf at 3.71. The Titan softball team also was above a 3.7 with a 3.70 GPA.
The Titan men's soccer program, which has consistently been among the nation's leaders in Division I in GPA, had 26 student-athletes above a 3.5 GPA as the team sported a 3.56 during the spring semester collectively. Detroit Mercy women's fencing had a 3.65 GPA and the Titan women's track and field and cross country program had a 3.53.
Titan women's lacrosse had a 3.55 GPA during the spring semester, while men's lacrosse and women's soccer both had matching 3.49 GPAs academically. Other squads above 3.4 were Detroit Mercy men's track and field and cross country (3.41) and Titan men's fencing (3.41).
Thirty-three (33) Titan student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPA's during the semester, including six each on men's lacrosse, softball and women's soccer and four more on women's lacrosse. In total, 215 Detroit Mercy student-athletes had a 3.0 GPA or better during the spring semester with six programs having 20 or more student-athletes within their respective teams to have more than 20 -- men's lacrosse (34), men's soccer (31), women's soccer (25), men's track and field/cross country (24), women's track and field/cross country (23) and women's lacrosse (21).
The Titans had more than 240 student-athletes and spirit squad members earn Detroit Mercy Athletic Director's Honor Roll accolades during the 2019-20 school year for sporting a 3.0 GPA or better.
