DETROIT (9/11/2022) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team started the season at home and had four runners in the top 20 at the 35th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Mercy Titan Invitational on Saturday.
The longest-standing event in school history was held on a cool day at Cass Benton Park in Northville.
Overall, the Titans earned third in the 5k race.
"It was a good race for us to see where we are at early in the season," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Guy Murray '89. "It was great to be back and hosting the event after last year was just a virtual one."
Junior
Allison Sherman - who was All-League last season - picked up right where she left off leading the Titans and taking fifth in 19:04.
Graduate senior
Rebecca Measel was just right behind her as she claimed fifth in 19:05, while junior
Kaitlin Murray was the next Titan in placing 17th in 20:11.
Making their collegiate debuts, freshman
Evie Wright earned 30th in 21:02 and freshman
Nina Pizzo was 60th in 24:43.
The event - which started as a women's only race in 1987 - also featured a pair of open 5k high school races as well as the Tommy Titan kids race.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 17, as the red, white and blue take part in another tradition in the National Catholic Championships at Notre Dame.
