Detroit Mercy Edged in Doubleheader at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. (3/29/22) - Senior McKenna Tanguay went 1-for-3 with a RBI double and run scored in game two while graduate student Leena Mortensen hit 2-for-2 with a walk as Detroit Mercy battled to the end but came up short in doubleheader action at Michigan State, 2-0 and 5-2, on Tuesday night at Secchia Stadium.

Senior Taylor Gauthier also hit 1-for-3 with a run while senior Taryn Peru hit 1-for-3 in game two. Junior Renee Trotman added an RBI off a fielder's choice.

In game one, graduate student Liz Murphy had one of her best outings of the season in the losing effort, going the distance allowing only two runs on six scattered hits with a strikeout and three walks in 6.0 innings of work. Senior Taryn Peru recorded Detroit Mercy's only hit of the game.

Game 1:
• MSU got on the board with a RBI single in the 1st inning
• It was a pitcher's duel as Murphy only allowed one run on four scattered hits through 5.0 innings.
• MSU added another run off an RBI single but Murphy gets of a bases loaded jam to keep Titans within striking distance
• The Titans got a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh inning off a throwing error but could not extend the game.
• Peru recorded Detroit Mercy's only hit of the game
• MSU's Sarah Ladd tossed a one-hit complete game shutout

Game 2:
• MSU took a 2-0 lead off a two-run homer in the second.
• Tanguay delivered an RBI double to score Gauthier. Trortman then reached on a fielder's choice to score Tanguay tying the game at 2-2 in the top of the third inning
• Detroit Mercy turned a critical double play in the fifth inning to get out of a jam
• MSU added a sacrifice fly and RBI double to extend the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning and held the Titans at bay in the seventh inning to earn the doubleheader sweep.
