DETROIT (8/28/22) - Senior
Taylor Stanley connected on a cross from graduate student
Julie Ann Piechocki in the 81st minute to secure the game-winning goal propelling Detroit Mercy to a 2-1 win over Canisius on Sunday afternoon at Titan field. Freshman
Sophia Blankenship also scored her second career goal of the season off an assist from
Abbey Lodato and Stanley.
Junior
Jazmine Scott made five saves in goal to pick up her second win of the season. She has now made five saves in three consecutive games.
Detroit Mercy struck first just four minutes into the game as Stanley took the ball down the right side of the field and slotted a pass over to Lodato who took the ball towards the corner. She turned and fired a pin-point cross that connected with Stanley who managed to slip past a defender and flick the ball into the net giving the Titans a 1-0 lead.
Canisius got the equalizer in the 31st minute.
The Titans took the lead for good as a Canisius defender could not clear a cross which ended up on the foot of Piechocki. She held the ball in, turned and sent a cross into the box where Stanley ran past a defender and placed a shot to the low left side to beat Jordan Spencer for the game-winner.
Detroit Mercy plays the first of two road games against Mid-American Conference opponents starting at in-state foe Central Michigan on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m.
