DETROIT (1/14/23) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team is back in action for the 2023 season as they travel to Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday, Jan. 15 for the Cleveland State Duals.
Meet Schedule
The Titans will be joined at Cleveland State by Denison University, Lawrence University, Incarnate Word, and Vassar College, along with the host Vikings.
The Cleveland State Duals are set to begin at 9:00 a.m. and in round one Detroit Mercy will compete against Incarnate Word.
In round two the Titans will battle with Denison and conclude the first half of the meet with Vassar in round three.
After a lunch break, Detroit Mercy will get back at it with Cleveland State in round four before finishing out the day with Lawrence in round five.
New Beginnings
Michael Ramlow was named the 13th head coach in men's fencing history back in October, replacing Todd Dressell after 23 years at the helm.
Ramlow fenced collegiately at Wayne State University from 2008-2012 where he compiled a 119-119 record in the Foil and a 29-33 career mark in the Epee. In his final season, Ramlow made it to the NCAA Championships where he finished 24th in the Epee after beginning the year competing with the Foil.
Following his collegiate career, Ramlow began working with the Renaissance Fencing Club in 2017 as an assistant Sabre coach working alongside Dressell.
Ramlow is a 20 year fencing veteran with five years of professional coaching experience.
The Fantastic Four
The Titans return four members of the 2022 team;
Jaylin Brown,
Peter Swanney,
Bryce Sturgis, and
Nathan Wodwaski. The group accounted for 21 wins last season for Detroit Mercy, led by Sturgis with seven in the Epee. Brown and Wodwaski return to the Foil and Swanney will compete in the Epee along with Sturgis.
New Faces
The team has added three new members to the team this season;
Jalen Ramirez,
Paul Rider, and
George Swanney.

Following the season opening duals at Cleveland State, the red, white, and blue will return home for their annual Titans Invitational from Calihan Hall beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21.
