HINCKLEY, Ohio (10/1/2024) – Sophomore David Swab made a run at medalist honors and the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team tallied a couple of top-five school marks as the Titans finished up Cleveland State's Tom Tontimonia Invitational on Tuesday.
Detroit Mercy posted a 3-under 277 in the final round to finish fourth with a 566 (289-277) at the par 70, 6,572-yard Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley, Ohio. It was the first time the Titans went under par in a round since registering a 3-under 285 in the second round of the 2021 Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.
Meanwhile, the 566 total was the second lowest in school history, behind only the 560 at the 2006 IPFW Fall Classic, while the final round 277 is the fifth-best 18-hole score in the school record book and the best since 2010.
Swab started his day three shots off the lead but fired a career-low 4-under 66 to share first with a career-best 135 (69-66). The 66 is tied for the third-best round in Titan history - and the best since 2009 - while his 135 is tied for the best two-round tournament in the record book with the 135 David Byrne tallied at IPFW in 2006.
After recording a 1-under 69 on day one, Swab came back to knock in five birdies and 12 pars to move to a share of first. He then entered a playoff, and after he parred the 18th hole the first time, he bogeyed on his second attempt to fall in the tiebreaker.
Senior Marko Banic tallied his second career top-20 finish as he tied for 20th with a 142 (71-71). He carded a pair of 1-over 71's as his second round saw him post 15 pars and a birdie.
Sophomore Mason Sokolowski shared 30th by tying his career-low with a 144 (74-70) as he went even-par on the day with 13 pars and three birdies. Sophomore Gowtham Nalluri missed tying his career low by one shot as he tied for 35th with a 145 (75-70), shooting even-par in the second round with 15 pars and an eagle on the par 5, fifth hole.
The Titans will now get ready for Central Michigan's Motor City Match-Up at the Birmingham Country Club from Oct. 14-15.
