DETROIT (10-10-24) - Graduate student
Joyelle Washington delivered a performance for the ages, scoring a hat trick to lead Detroit Mercy to a wild 4-3 come-from-behind win over Wright State on Thursday night at Titan Field to remain undefeated in #HLMSOC play. Freshman
Sam Sickinger also came up clutch scoring her second game-winning goal of the season.
Washington's hat trick was the first for UDM (6-6-2, 4-0-2 HL) since Rachel Russo against Purdue Fort Wayne during the 2017 season. It also marked the first hat trick in league play since Mary Parker against Cleveland State in 2006.
Redshirt senior
Madelyn Baucom added two assists on Washington's goals, while Redshirt senior
Justice Tillotson posted her first career assist in a Titan uniform.
Soraya Puerto-Khalil also added a helper on Sickinger's game-winner.
Wright State's (3-8-1, 1-3-1 HL) goalkeeper was assigned a red card just six minutes into the match, forcing the Raiders to play a man down the rest of the game. However, that didn't slow the WSU offense as they responded with two goals in the 18th and 38th minute to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
For the second straight game, Washington got to work scoring a goal within the first minute of the second half as she took a long feed from Baucom and scored off a breakaway just 56 seconds in.
It was deja vu for the Titans just 20 seconds later, as Tillotson hit a long ball free kick to Washington, who once again got behind the WSU back line on a breakaway and beat back-up goalkeeper Erin Baker to the low left side for the equalizer tying the game at 2-2.
WSU once again would not go away as the Raiders took a 3-2 lead in the 72nd minute.
In the 76th minute, the Titans connected on a corner kick set piece as Baucom sent the cross into the box, where Washington fought through traffic and flicked a loose ball into the net for the equalizer to complete the hat trick.
Puerto-Khalil then got the ball and took the ball down the right side in the 84th minute. She beat a defender and sent a cross into the box to Sickinger, who snuck in unmarked to put home the volley for the 4-3 game-winner.
UDM hits the road for a #HLWSOC match at Cleveland State on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
