DETROIT (11/17/2024) -- University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse head coach Alexa Matta has been busy at work in her first four months as she announced her first recruiting class with three freshmen and a transfer.
Signing with the Titans for next year are Alison Smiley, Morgan Stamatakis and Olivia Starr, while Ireland Costigan will transfer in from Butler ahead of the 2025 season.
"Each player brings a unique skill set, and we're eager to see how they contribute to our team dynamic," said coach Matta. "They represent the future of our program, and we're excited about the potential they bring to both our on-field performance and culture."
Alison Smiley * 5-6 * Attack * Livonia, Mich. * Mercy
- Lettered in basketball and lacrosse
- Tallied 80 goals, 27 assists, 26 caused turnovers, 36 ground balls and 36 draw controls as a junior as she was named the team's Offensive player of the year
- Tabbed All-League twice and was All-State and All-Catholic last season
- Has been an All-Scholar Athlete all three years
- Plays club with Triumph Lacrosse
Morgan Stamatakis * 5-11 * Defense * Troy, Mich. * Troy Athens
- A three-year letterwinner in lacrosse
- Posted 50 goals last year, including a career-high 10 against Rochester Adams
- Selected All-League as a sophomore and junior as well as Third Team All-State as a sophomore and Honorable Mention last season
- Also tabbed Academic All-State as a junior
- Played club with Detroit United Lacrosse
Olivia Starr * 5-10 * Attack * Ancaster, Ont. * Westmount Secondary
- Lettered in hockey, touch football and volleyball in high school, while playing club lacrosse
- A member of U19 and U15 Team Ontario and the U22 Ontario Women's box lacrosse
- Also played lacrosse with Rock Stars Elite, Burlington Minor, Hamilton Lacrosse and JEWL Selects Junior Elite
- Helped her team to a gold medal at the USA Box Lacrosse nationals in 2023 and a silver in 2024, and a bronze for the U19 Ontario Field team at the Jenny Kyle Cup
- Was the game MVP in the bronze effort at the Carol Patterson nationals
Ireland Costigan * 5-6 * Attack * East Garafraxa, Ont. * The Hill Academy (Butler)
- A transfer from Butler, but did not see any action last season
- Played lacrosse and volleyball in high school
- A member of Team Ontario at the Canadian Nationals and helped the team win gold in 2022
- Represented Team Ireland's National team in the European Championship in 2023
- Played club with the Orangeville Northmen
