BUFFALO (3/2/2024) -- Senior
Cat Kopchia tallied a season-high five points as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team had an early lead but could not hold on as Canisius went on an offensive charge that the Titans could not overcome eventually falling short, 14-11, at their Jesuit rival on Saturday afternoon.
Kopchia had three goals and two assists, along with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior
Maddy Camm recorded a career-best three points on a career-tying two goals, an assist, three caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draw controls and sophomore
Alyssa Jarvis posted a pair of goals and a team-high and career-tying five draw controls.
The Titans (0-5) saw Canisius (3-1) take an early 3-0 lead but stormed back with five straight goals. Jarvis started the spurt with a goal and Kopchia followed with her first at the 9:09 mark.
Detroit Mercy then took advantage of a Canisius foul, and senior
Abby Schillinger tied the game at 3-3 off a free-position goal. After the Titans killed off a two-minute penalty, they jumped in front with another free-position goal as Jarvis beat the keeper for a 4-3 lead with 1:59 left and a yellow card on the Golden Griffins led to a marker from senior
Marina Butler and the red, white and blue were on top 5-3 at the end of the first.
In the second, Camm located sophomore
Libby Cuckler and she fired one in for a 6-4 lead at the 12:11 mark and the Titans led by two again at 7-5 as senior
Ella Brandt rook a pass from Cuckler and slipped one past the keeper with 9:23 remaining.
In the fourth, the Titans tried to come back from the 14-7 deficit as Jarvis won a draw, and Camm finished with a goal with 3:47 on the clock. Another Jarvis win at the draw led to another goal off the crosse of Camm to make it 14-9.
A caused turnover by senior
Sarah Meek got the Titans the ball back and Kopchia finished it with a marker with 1:15 left. Kopchia then added a score with the women-up with just 12 ticks left in the contest.
Junior
Meredith Leavell stopped nine shots and Meek tied her career best with three caused turnovers.
The Titans were 18-of-19 on clears and came away with 10 takeaways, forcing 16 Canisius turnovers.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Tuesday as it visits another Jesuit school in Xavier.
