Gashaj, Hessem Lead The Way In Season Finale At Michigan

Senior Sidny Hessem posted a pair of career marks at Michigan.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (4/27/2024) -- Freshman Gabriela Gashaj recorded a pair of personal records and three Titan hammer throwers posted career bests as the University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team ended the regular season at Michigan's Len Paddock Open on Saturday.

Senior Kayla Smith led the PR hammer squad, claiming third with a toss of 50.64 meters, good for eighth in school history.

Senior Sidny Hessem tallied a pair of career marks, throwing 37.63m in the hammer for 10th and 36.28m for eighth in the discus, while also taking seventh in the javelin at 28.60m. Freshman Grace Steffes was 12th in the hammer with a career-best 34.63m and finished ninth in the javelin (21.47m) and discus (36.10) and 10th in the shot put (9.08m).

Gashaj clocked a season-low 16.30 for seventh in the 100-meter hurdles and a season-best 1:06.90 for sixth in the 400-meter hurdles.

Senior Alexa Krauth placed fifth in the 100mH in 14.89, while sophomore Gracelyn Peebles earned in the 400mH in 1:06.20.

The other PR on the day saw sophomore McKenzie McNitt clock 59.52 for sixth in the 400-meters.

The Horizon League Championship is on deck as the Titans will make the short trip to Oakland from May 3-5.
