Claire Borg came up clutch, going 3-for-3 with two RBI, including driving in the winning run in the eighth inning, leading the Titans to a 3-2 win over former #HLSB opponent UIC, securing the victory win of the season at the
Jeannie McHaney Memorial Classic on Saturday night at Rocky Johnson Field.
UDM (1-8) racked up a season-high eight hits as sophomore
Jada Davis went 2-for-4 with a run while junior
Trinity Fessler went 1-for-4 with a run. Freshmen
Allison Fluker and
Natalie Babcock each recorded a hit, while
Leah Daniels secured an RBI off a sacrifice fly.
Freshman
Erin Flynn was solid in the circle, tossing 7.0 innings with four strikeouts, allowing two runs (one earned) in the no-decision effort.
Senior
Jordan Kavanagh picked up the win, keeping the Flames off the board in the eighth inning.
In game one against the Miners, UDM had seven hits with Fessler and Davis each hitting a double but came up on the short end of a pitchers' duel, only surrendering both runs off a pair of wild pitches.
UIC Recap:
• UDM loaded the bases as Borg drew a walk followed by singles from Babcock and Fluker in the second inning. Daniels hit a sac fly to score Borg giving the Titans a 1-0 lead.
• Borg hit an RBI single in the third inning to score Davis for a 2-0 advantage.
• The Flames cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
• UIC then tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. After the Flames loaded the bases, Babcock saved the day by throwing out the winning run at the plate keeping the game tied at 2-2.
• In the top of the eighth, Fessler and Davis reached on singles. Borg delivered an RBI single, scoring Fessler for a 3-2 lead.
• Kavanaugh can in and held UIC off the board to pick up her first win of the season
UTEP Recap:
• Hallman and Fessler led off the first and second inning, respectively, with a double but were left stranded.
• UTEP took the lead off a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning.
• UDM got runners on first and second but couldn't get a run across
• The Miners add their second run off a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead
• Hallman reached on a single in the seventh with two outs but was also left stranded to end the game.
