Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Titans Stifle Canisius For First Win Of 2025

DETROIT (2/22/2025) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team used some tough defense and timely offense to pick up its first win of the season as the Titans downed Jesuit-rival Canisius, 12-7, on Saturday at Titan Field.

The seven goals allowed was the fewest since beating Eastern Michigan, 17-7, in 2023. It was also the first Titan win for head coach Alexa Matta.

Senior Meredith Leavell made 12 saves with five ground balls. Senior Katie Bilello tallied a career-high four caused turnovers and seven ground balls, while senior Sophie Davis posted two caused turnovers and a ground ball.

Senior Maddy Camm had a career-high five points on three goals and two assists, along with six draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. It was her fifth career hat trick and she also moved to 10th in school history with 96 draws.

Junior Libby Cuckler and freshman Sophia Schwab each had two goals and an assist, the first goals and points for Schwab, and freshman Jaeda Jensen recorded her first two collegiate markers.

The Titans (1-2) saw Canisius (1-3) score first, but Camm knotted it at 1-1 at the 8:44 mark. That is how the opening period ended as Leavell made four saves, and Camm, Bilello and Davis all had takeaways.

In the second, the red, white, and blue scored five straight to take a 6-1 advantage and had a 6-2 lead at the break. Jensen had her first goal off the free position early on and scored another off a pass from Camm. On the women-up, sophomore Erin Balbontin fed freshman Tunie Mullen for a 4-1 lead with six minutes left, and then a caused turnover by junior Alyssa Jarvis led to Schwab finding Camm for a 5-1 score. The Titans got the ball back and Schwab beat the keeper to make it 6-1 with 2:53 remaining in the second.

In the third, Canisius had two goals and was looking for more, but the Titan defense stepped up as Leavell made four more saves and Bilello registered two caused turnovers. The Golden Griffins did make it a one-score affair at 6-5 early in the fourth, but right after that goal, Balbontin won the draw and Camm located Cuckler for the goal, igniting a 4-0 run.

Camm earned the draw on the next possession, and Cucker again found the back of the net for an 8-5 lead at 12:04 on the clock. Another draw win by Camm and a green card on Canisius saw Camm rifle in the free position for a four-goal advantage, and the Titans went up 10-5 with 5:57 left as another women-up opportunity saw Javis score.

The Titans added two late goals as a Jarvis win at the draw saw senior Leah Bodnar score her first and Schwab netted another with just five ticks left.

UDM won the battle of draw controls, 15-8, and was 19-of-24 on clears. The defense forced the Golden Griffins into 21 turnovers, 12 of those caused, and held them to 15-of-23 on clears and 2-of-6 on the free position.

Detroit Mercy will now have a week off before heading down south for three games, starting at Kennesaw State on March 2.
