DETROIT (5-2-25) - In her last game as a Titan and first start of the season, junior
Chloe Spitzer left it all out on the field tossing 7.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts as Detroit Mercy fell 5-0 to IU Indy in a pitcher's duel during the first leg of doubleheader action on Senior Day Saturday at Buysse Ballpark. UDM fell 10-1 in the nightcap.
After allowing only one hit in the first and second innings, Sptizer held the Jags without a hit until the top of the eighth inning, where they broke through with a grand slam home run. Conversely, the Titans (10-33, 7-17 HL) drew four walks but only recorded one hit by freshman
Madeline Hallman against IU Indy (21-15, 15-9 HL) pitcher Alexa Holman.
Hallman also went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore
Jada Davis went 1-for-2 with a double in game two. Senior
Amanda Schick and freshman
Leah Daniels also hit 1-for-2.
Game 1 Recap:
• UDM drew two walks from junior
Trinity Fessler and Davis in the bottom of the first inning. After Fessler was caught stealing, freshman
Abby Klaft reached on an error, but she and Davis were stranded.
• Hallman led off the second inning with a single but was left stranded as the next three batters were retired in order.
• Freshmen
Allison Fluker and
Liv Peterson each drew a walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. However, freshman
Natalie Babcock reached on a fielder's choice, but Fluker was thrown out at third base to end the inning.
• The Jags broke through with an RBI single with the bases loaded, followed by a grand slam to lead 5-0 in the top of the eighth inning. Holman retired the Titans in order to end the game.
Game 2 Recap:
• The Jags got a two-run single in the first inning and a solo homer in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
• IU Indy added a pair of two-run singles in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
• The Titans were able to get on the board in the bottom half off a throwing error, but couldn't add any more runs.
