Women's Golf To Tee It Off Up North In Fall Opener

Sophomore Emma McKinley and the Titans will look to get off to a strong start up North.

DETROIT (8/29/2025) -- A brand new season for the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team will start on Sunday as the Titans make the journey up north for the A-Ga-Ming Invitational.

The two-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Central Michigan at the par 72, 6,000-yard A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort in Kewadin, Michigan. The first two rounds will have a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m., on Sunday, Aug. 31, with the final round going off on Labor Day Monday, also at 9:00 a.m.

The field will include the host Chippewas, Bellarmine, Bowling Green, Bradley, Chicago State, Green Bay, Loyola Chicago, Oakland, Ohio, and Western Michigan.

This is the third-straight season that UDM will compete in the event. In 2023, the Titans finished 11th with a 953 as graduate senior Ariel Chang shared 20th, shooting a 226 (76-75-75). Last season, the red, white and blue tallied a 993 for 12th, with senior Taylor Kondel leading the way, taking 52nd with a 244 (83-79-82).

Both Chang and Kondel will look to lead a well-rounded squad in their final season, a roster that includes four upperclassmen and five underclassmen.

Chang - who redshirted last season - is a two-time All-Horizon League selection who has a 75.80 career average in 46 rounds, just four rounds short of qualifying for the all-time Titan record. In 21 career events, she has 17 top-20 efforts and 14 top-10 finishes, with one win. As a junior, she posted a 76.47 average, good for a share of fourth in school history, while as a sophomore, her 76.05 average broke the school record.

Meanwhile, Kondel is 10th in school history with an 82.06 average as she has started all 26 events in her Titan career. Last year, she was second on the team with a career-low 80.41 average and topped the team in five events. She recorded her 54-hole best by shooting a 231 (78-72-81) at Purdue's Boilermaker Spring Classic and led the Titans at the Horizon League Championship by just missing All-Tournament consideration, finishing 11th with a 239 (80-79-80).

Senior Kyla Charlebois and junior Gabriella Tapp return to help bolster the upperclass. Tapp made a major impact in her first season as a Titan after transferring from Eastern Michigan, leading the team with an 80.31. She led the team twice and was second on three occasions, while registering three top-20 performances and placing 27th at the Horizon League get together with a 252 (80-86-86).

Charlebois has seen action in 21 career tournaments and was fifth on the team with an 84.06 average last year, posting career marks for a round and 36-hole tournament.

Three sophomores saw a lot of action as rookies and had to grow up quickly in their first year. Emma McKinley suited up in seven tournaments and was third on the team with an 82.65 average, including a 30th-place finish at the HL showdown with a 257 (85-87-85). Morgan Jones was in the line-up in eight events and tallied an 85.35 average, finishing just behind McKinley in 31st with a 258 (91-87-80), while Sophie Hauser saw action in four events as a rookie and posted an 89.70 mark.

Two freshmen will look to contribute as well in Sadie Kondel - the younger sister of Taylor - and Ava Wisinski. Both were All-State players in high school and have the ability to crack the line-up
