Abby Klaft went 2-for-5, delivering the game-winning hit, scoring freshman
Hannah Schlachter in the 10th inning, to cap off Detroit Mercy's epic 10-9 win coming back from 6-0 down to Butler during the opening day of action at the WKU Hilltopper Classic on Friday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex. Schlachter also came up clutch, belting her first career home run with a three-run shot as the Titans scored nine runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. The Titans fell short 1-0 in a pitcher's duel to Western Michigan in game two action.
Freshman
Savannah Schultz went 2-for-4 at the plate and picked up her first career win in the circle, going 3.0 innings in relief with a strikeout.
Sophomore
Madeline Hallman went 1-for-3 with two RBI, two runs, and two walks, while junior
Jada Davis hit 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run.
Senior
Trinity Fessler recorded two of Detroit Mercy's (2-5) three hits, with Schlachter going 1-for-2 to record the other hit. Schultz also got the loss, going 3.0 innings, allowing only the lone run as the starter against the Broncos.
Butler Recap:
• The Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added two more runs in the second to move ahead 6-0.
• Davis put UDM on the board with an RBI single, scoring Hallman in the top of the sixth inning.
• Fessler then reached on an error to score Daivs and Schlachter. Davis was the only earned run out of the nine in the inning.
• Sophomore
Natalie Babcock added an RBI single, scoring Fessler, followed by a two-run single from Hallman, plating Babcock and sophomore
Wendy Ketola, tying the game at 6-6.
• Schlachter's three-run shot capped off the inning, giving the Titans a 9-6 lead.
• However, Butler responded with a three-run homer in the bottom half, tying the game at 9-9.
• Klaf hit the game-winning single at the pitcher to score Schlachter, who automatically was placed on second base to start the inning under the tie-breaker rule.
WMU Recap:
• The Bronco scored its lone run in the third inning off a sacrifice fly.
• Sophomore
Erin Flynn tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts.
The Titans continue play at the Hilltopper Classic against host Western Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 1:30 pm ET, followed by a rematch with Western Michigan at 6:30 pm. ET.
