Ariel Chang made up three shots and put herself into the top group heading into the final round as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team ended the second day of the Horizon League Golf Championship on Saturday afternoon.
Overall, Detroit Mercy improved by two shots from round one and is in fifth place with a 634 (318-316) at the par 73, 6038-yard El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida. UDM is just nine shots out of second place.
Chang is in a three-way tie for first with a 149 (75-74) after carding a 1-over 74 on the day. She started the day with five straight pars and had seven pars and a birdie on the front nine before knocking in eight pars on the back nine, including six in a row to end the day.
She will go into the final 18 tied with NKU's Eva Maley and Oakland's Olivia Hemmila.
Junior
Gabriella Tapp is challenging for All-Tournament honors as she shares 12th with a 157 (79-78), four shy of the top five. She had a slow start with three bogeys to open her round and was 5 over through five holes, but she tallied two birdies and nine pars in her next 13 holes for her 78.
Sophomore
Morgan Jones is tied for 19th with a 161 (81-80). Jones recorded a birdie and six pars on the front nine and six more pars the rest of the way.
The final round of the league meet will tee off at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow.
