Savannah Schultz delivered a double-duty performance for the ages, hitting 2-for-3 with three RBI off a two-run homer and a single while tossing a complete game in the circle, leading No. 6 seed Detroit Mercy to a 7-5 upset win over No. 3 seed Robert Morris in the opening round of the #2026 #HLSB Championship on Wednesday afternoon at YSU Sports Complex. The win snapped an eight-game skid as the Titans advanced and will play No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky on Thur., May 7, at 2:30 p.m.
Senior
Trinity Fessler went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer while freshman
Jenna Higgins hit 2-for-4 with a clutch game-winning RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore
Abby Klaft also went 1-for-3, adding a crucial RBI with the bases loaded after Higgins' RBI single in the seventh inning.
Junior
Liv Peterson went 1-for- 4 with the first hit and run scored of the game. Sophomore
Wendy Ketola and sophomore
Natalie Babcock also hit 1-for-3 each.
Recap:
• After a scoreless first inning, Peterson got the first hit of the game in the second inning and was driven home from Schultz's RBI single for a 1-0 Titan lead.
• After a walk from Ketola, Fessler's two-run shot moved the UDM ahead 3-0 in the top of the third.
• Klaft led off the fourth inning with a single, followed by Schultz's two-run shot, giving UDM a 5-0 lead.
• In the bottom half, RMU got a run off an RBI single and had the bases loaded, but Schulz forced a foul out to get out of the jam.
• The Colonials added an RBI single followed by a pair of RBI doubles to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth. The Titans' defense shined again with a 6-5-3 double play to get out of the inning, leaving two Colonials stranded and the game tied.
• Higgins made a diving catch in center field with a runner on second to save a run from scoring from second base and get the Titans out of the bottom of the sixth inning with the game still tied.
• Higgins then came up clutch at the plate with an RBI single, scoring Schlachter, giving UDM a 6-5 lead.
• Klaft was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, moving the Titans ahead 7-5.
• After the lead-off runner reached base in the top of the seventh, Schultz got through the meat of the RMU lineup to secure UDM's first tournament win in seven years.
