Titans To Face Wright State On ESPNU

Gametracker

The Horizon League Game of the Week takes place in the Motor City as the Titans will look to end a four-game losing streak on national television when Detroit faces Wright State on Friday at 9:05 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPNU as part of the Horizon League's Friday Night Game of the Week TV package.

Detroit native and Cass Tech High School alum Michael Reghi will have the play-by-play for the event with Jim Chones adding the color.

WDTW-AM 1310 will carry the game over the air with Matt Dery calling all the action. In addition, fans can catch all the action with a live stats feed through CSTV's gametracker. The game will not be streamed live on the internet on the Horizon League Network.

Part of the game's festivities will include the honoring of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In a continuation of a tradition, the Horizon League will honor the late Dr. King  with a student-centered arts contest.

Each of the League schools hosting games that weekend, will partner with a local elementary or middle school to organize a contest for fifth- or sixth-graders who will submit a piece of art, an essay, or a musical performance focusing on the life of Martin Luther King. Winners will be chosen from each of the schools.

The winners will receive three free tickets to the game and be recognized on the court during pre-game or halftime festivities and receive a commemorative gift from the Horizon League. In addition, the winning projects will be displayed at the arenas.

The Titans have partnered with GESU Elementary School in Detroit for the yearly celebration.

ABOUT WRIGHT STATE
One of the hottest teams in the Horizon League, Wright State enters the game with a 9-8 record, including a 3-3 mark in the conference. After dropping their first six games of the year, the Raiders have won nine of their last 11, which included a six-game winning streak that ended with a 64-48 loss at Butler last Thursday.

Juniors Cory Cooperwood and John David Gardner are tied for the team lead in scoring at 9.6 ppg. The 6-7 Cooperwood also tops the team in rebounds at five per game, while Gardner paces the squad with 3.3 assists per contest.

WSU might have starting guard Vaughn Duggins back in the line up. The junior, who was a first team All-Horizon League pre-season selection, has missed the last 13 games after having surgery to repair a broken right ring finger.

Brad Brownell is in his third year as the Raiders head coach, where he has led the team to two 20-win campaigns. He is 53-28 at WSU, but overall, owns a coaching mark of 136-68 with a four year stint at UNC-Wilmington before arriving at WSU.

DETROIT VS. WRIGHT STATE
Detroit owns the overall series, 18-13, but Wright State has won five in a row and six of the last seven meetings. Streaks have dominated the series as WSU won the first five games against UDM, but then the Titans bounced back with eight straight victories in the middle of winning 13 out of 14. Since 2002, Wight State is 9-5 in the match-up. The Titans are 9-5 all-time against the Raiders in the Motor City, but have dropped the last two meetings in Calihan Hall.

EXPECTING A SHOOTOUT?
Friday's match-up features two of the lowest scoring teams in the conference as WSU is averaging just 58.0 points per game ahead of only Detroit's 55.3. Wright State is also third in the conference in scoring defense allowing just 56.6 a night, ahead of Detroit who is fourth at 63.3.

The two teams are also last in field goal percentage (.398) and are at the bottom in 3- point field goal percentage (Detroit - .274, Wright State - .262.).

BLUE COMING THROUGH
After not playing in the Titans' first seven games of the year, junior college transfer Eugene Blue has seen action in seven of UDM's last eight games, coming away with a season's best five rebounds at Valparaiso and eight points at then-No. 21/20 Butler.

HOLDING DOWN BUTLER
Detroit held nationally ranked Butler to just 2-of-10 from the three-point line in its 54-50 loss its last time out. The Bulldogs came into the game second in the Horizon League in 3-point field goal percentage (.378) as well as first in 3-point field goals made with nearly nine per game.

GETTING IT DOWN INSIDE THE ARC
Junior Thomas Kennedy is among the Titan leaders with a .441 field goal percentage, despite hitting on only 10 of his 46 three-point attempts. From inside the arc, the Detroit native is 53-of-97 on the year (55%) as well as 21-for-25 (84%) at the free throw line.

THINK ABOUT THIS
With transfers Eli Holman and Chase Simon sitting out, the injury to Xavier Keeling and the suspension of Chris Hayes, the Titans have only nine scholarship players on their 12-man active roster. In Detroit's 54-50 loss at Butler on Jan. 10, UDM had the ball back down two, 52-50, with 18 seconds left and had two walk-ons, senior Tryl Hartfield and freshman Jordan Fee, on the floor for its last possession.

HOME SWEET HOME
Since Calihan Hall opened in 1952, known as the University's Memorial Building until 1977, the Titans have amassed an impressive 527-206 (.720) record at home, including a 69-31 mark in UDM's last 100 games.

In fact, in the early part of the decade, Calihan Hall was one of the toughest places for opponents to visit as Detroit won a school record 39 games in a row at home, which was also the longest in the nation at the time, before falling to Green Bay, 65-61, on Feb. 11, 2002.
