Titans Climb Into Ninth On Zippy Invitational Second Day

Final Score Board

The Titan women's gofers successfully made up some ground on the opposition Tuesday and finished in a ninth-place tie at the Zippy Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron.

With Monday's second 18 holes at Rosemont Country Club suspended by darkness, UDM closed out that round on Tuesday morning with a sparkling 316, the fifth-best team total of the round. The Titans were led by Jackie DeMarco's (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) career-low 74.

From there, they followed with a 334 over Tuesday's final 18 holes to end up in a tie with Bowling Green at 991 for the tournament. Grand Valley State edged Toledo for the team title.

Junior Alainna Stefan (Dearborn, MI/Mercy) ended up showing the way for UDM by tying for 31st place individually with an 82-80-86-248 tally. Marni Achterhoff (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores), another junior, was right on Stefan's heels as she put together an 82-83-84-249 work sheet to end up in a deadlock for 36th place.

"We sent a veteran lineup to this tournament and I thought our seniors (Alex Aversa and Rachel McHenry) improved as the tournament went on. They really grinded," coach Terri Anthony-Ryan said. "But we're still waiting to hit on all cylinders."

The Titans have one more tournament remaining on their fall schedule, as they now get ready to head to the Dayton Invitational, October 19-20.
