Softball Blanked by North Texas

Box Score

The Detroit Titans softball team continued play at the Corpus Christi Invitational Saturday afternoon on the campus of Texas A&M C.C. with a 6-0 setback to North Texas.

Despite having only three hits against North Texas (2-0) junior pitcher Ashley Lail, Detroit (0-3) had scoring opportunities on three different occasions, but left six total runners on base for the game.

In the first inning, the Titans had the bases loaded with two outs but could not plate a runner to take an early lead. North Texas then took a 6-0 lead with two runs in the first and four in the second inning.

UDM once again got runners in scoring position on second and third base in the third inning, but could not get a needed two-out hit to get on the board. The Titans also left a runner stranded in the fourth.

Senior Jacqueline Nortman (Groves, TX/Msgr. Kelly Catholic), sophomore Ellen Sinclair (Chatham, ON/Chatham-Kent) and junior Jessica Liebner (Ortonville, MI/Brandon) accounted for Detroit's hits. After a rough start in the first two innings, junior ace pitcher Jill Perry (Ortonville, MI/Brandon) shuto ut the Mean Green over the next four frames, finishing the game with five strikeouts.

North Texas was led by sophomore Mariza Martinez, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Lail picked the win, retiring 21 batters with two strikeouts.

The Titans continue tournament play with a rematch against Indiana State Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., followed by a game versus host Texas A&M C.C. at 5:00 p.m. EST.
