Detroit Upended By Manhattan

Box Score

Three Titans netted two goals and Detroit forced 25 turnovers on the day, but a 6-0 Manhattan run in the third period proved to be the difference as UDM fell to the Jaspers, 14-9, at Joe Walton Field on Saturday afternoon.

UDM (0-3) trailed 4-0 when the Titans struck for four straight goals to tie the game. Sophomore Jeff Julius started the run with a goal at the 2:57 mark in the first. After five scoreless minutes to start the second period, sophomore Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) found the back of the net that was followed with junior Pat O'Shea's (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) man-up goal with 6:30 left in the half. Gregson then tallied his second marker of the game less then a minute later to knot it all up, but Manhattan (1-2) posted two late goals to take a 6-4 lead at the half.

Detroit jumped out with a goal to start the third as freshman John Nowicki (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle Collegiate) stroked one past the goalie. Manhattan then scored six straight to break the game, including with the man-up advantage.

The Titans, though, never gave up as the red, white and blue once again answered with a 4-0 spurt of their own starting with senior Kevin Demorest's (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm ) goal with 56 seconds left in the third. Nowicki then tallied his second marker with just five seconds left in the third, while freshman Vince Wigdahl (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) and O'Shea added scored in the fourth to pull UDM within three, 12-9, with 9:48 left in the game, but that was as close as UDM would get as Manhattan scored the last two goals of the game to take the contest.

O'Shea ended the game with a pair of goals and an assist, while senior Michael Schumacher and sophomore Tim Lehto (Farmington, MI/North Farmington) also had helpers on the day. Freshman Danny Preston (Hempstead, NY/Hempstead) took all of Detroit's face-offs winning 13-of-26, while junior goalkeeper Vince Diana (Massillon, OH/Jackson ) played the whole game in net making 13 saves.

The Titans will play their second straight game tomorrow as Detroit will face Robert Morris at noon.
