Softball Falls at Valparaiso

The Detroit Titans softball team concluded its opening Horizon League series at Valparaiso with an 8-0 setback.

For the second consecutive game, Detroit (3-15, 0-3 HL) had trouble mounting any offense against a Valparaiso (15-6, 3-0 HL) pitcher. Freshman Alex Lagesse allowed only one Titan hit by junior Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Sebewaing Area) with two strikeouts and one walk in five innings of work to pick up the win.

The Titans' best opportunity to score came in the first inning as Houthoofd got on base with a single and moved into scoring position by stealing second. However, she was left stranded as Lagesse got to the next two batters to fly out ending the threat.

Detroit got a runner aboard in the third and fourth inning on fielding error and walk respectively but could not move them into scoring position.

Valparaiso took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by Sadie Conner and Joylyn Ichiyama.

After another run in the third, the Crusaders added four more runs in the fifth inning on a RBI triple by Jordan Ruthowski, double by Ashley Wolter and a two-run RBI single by Wolter to end the game.

The Titans host IPFW in a home opening doubleheader at Buysse Ballpark on Tuesday, 24 at 3 p.m. EST.
