The University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team faced Oakland in a dual match-up Friday afternoon at the Western Golf & Country Club in Redford, MI, and the Grizzlies finished on top with an 18-hole total score of 318 to the Titans' 326. Only one round was played due to the conditions of the course.
Detroit sophomore
Alainna Stefan (Dearborn, MI/Mercy) fired a 77 to place first, while Elizabeth Ecker (Oakland) was one shot behind to finish second. Junior
Alex Aversa (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) and freshman
Jackie DeMarco (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) both tied for sixth (82) for UDM, while Titan sophomore
Marni Achterhoff (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) was three shots back to place eighth.
“It was great to see Alex come back today against Oakland,” said Detroit head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “Alex, Jackie and Alainna all had a great front nine and then they also played well on the back nine.”
Senior
Jenny Kubert (Livonia, MI/Stevenson) and sophomore
Liz Zouzal (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) rounded out Detroit's participants as Kubert placed 11th with an 89 and Zouzal finished in 12th (91).
“We had a long two weeks and I think it showed today, but we will work hard in the next couple of weeks to prepare us for the Horizon League Championship in Kentucky,” added Anthony-Ryan.
The Titans will return to action when they compete at the Bowling Green State University Falcon Invitational in Bowling Green, OH, on April 14-15.
