A dominating all around effort highlighted by a 70-year old school record broken was the main attraction at the Fourth Annual Detroit-Oakland Dual as the men's track and field team came away with a 102-62 victory over the Golden Grizzles on Thursday afternoon at Titan Field.
“Overall, a great day for a track meet,” said Director of Track and Field
Guy Murray. “We responded with a great effort and a lot of great performances.”
The men won 14 of 16 contested events, including sweeping all of the running events.
Sophomore
Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI / Petoskey) etched his name in another UDM milestone this time in the mile, where he recorded a meet and outdoor UDM record with a time of 4:13.68 for the victory. The previous outdoor standard had stood for more then 70 years with Bill Daly owning the mark with a 4:16.6 run in 1935.
“We don't run the outdoor mile often and we have tried to break this record a few times and it just hasn't happened,” said Murray. “Pat lead from wire to wire with a great solo effort breaking Titan Hall-of -Famer William Daly's record.”
Sophomore
Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI / Ferndale ) won the 100 and 200m breaking two meet records in the process. Cleary finished first in the 100m with a time of 10.89, while garnering a 22.18 in the 200m. Sophomore
Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas / Coakley) also came in under the old meet record in the 200m finishing the race in second place in 22.20.
One final record broken was in the 800m as junior
Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI / Comstock Park) and
Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON / Denis Morris Catholic) each went under the facility record in the closet race on the day. Gould would wind up winning the event in a personal record1:55.58, just ahead of Mahler's 1:55.59. With the slight edgle, Gould pushed himself to No. 10 in Titan annals in the event.
“Matt and Alex got out and went after it and did a great job to get under the meet and stadium record,” added Murray.
Senior
Adam Mayhew (Richland, MI / Gull Lake) and freshman
Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI / Yale) were the only Titans to win three events on the day. Mayhew won the shot put (14.65m), and hammer (52.27) in a meet record while also claiming first in the discus (45.21), while Campbell won the triple jump with a leap of 12.25m and swept both hurdle events with career times of 15.19 in the 100mH and a 57.97 in the 400Mh. His 110mH time now stands eight in school history.
Senior
John LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI / De LaSalle Collegiate) collected a first-place finish with a run of 49.85 in the 400m, edging out younger brother freshman
Joe LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI / De LaSalle Collegiate), who finished second in 51.14.
“A great race for the senior in his last home meet, while anchoring the 4x400m to win,” noted Murray.
Sophomore
Ryan Ayala (Coopersville, MI / Coopersville) earned first in the 3000m with a run of 9:02.64, while sophomore
Kevin Smalley (Gladwin, MI / Gladwin) won the steeplechase in a career best 10:00.61.
The men's 4x400m also came away with a victory as the team of John and
Joe LaRocca, Gould and junior
Kevin Wozniak (Dearborn, MI / Edsel Ford) placed first in 3:25.15.
The dual featured a special Tommy Titans vs. the kid's 100m race with youngster Brandon Cooper crossing the finish line first in 16.57. Four Titan seniors were also honored as
Eric Christy,
Jon Hans, LaRocca and Mayhew participated in their last home event for UDM.
The Titans will be back in action this weekend as a small UDM squad will compete in the EMU Twilight on Friday and Saturday.
