Titans Fall to Wright State

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

The Detroit Titans softball team dropped a pair of Horizon League games, 9-0 and 12-2, on Senior Day to visiting Wright State Saturday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark.

Before the doubleheader, the team honored its lone senior, Jacqueline Nortman (Groves, TX/Monsignor. Kelly Catholic), for her hard work and dedication to the program on and off the field coupled with academic excellence in the classroom.

Detroit (7-32, 3-13 HL) hung tough with Wright State (25-17, 11-6 HL) in the second game through the first six innings led by junior Jessica Liebner (Ortonville, MI/Brandon) who went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

UDM fell behind 1-0 in the second inning as WSU's Mollie Berry scored on a fielding error, Detroit responded as Liebner hit a single through the left side and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Rachel Copple (Dearborn Heights, MI/Allen Park Cabrini). After another single from freshman Krissy Pitock (Carleton, MI/Carleton-Airport), junior Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Unionville Sebewaing Area) reached on a throwing error on the Raider pitcher which allowed Liebner to score tying the game at 1-1.

In the fourth inning, WSU added four runs highlighted by an three-run double by Malerie Klingler to take a 5-1 lead. After the Raiders added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, sophomore Breana Sesoko (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) got aboard in the sixth on a single to left field. After being moved to second on a Liebner ground out, Sesoko advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the WSU catcher to pull UDM within four runs at 6-2.

However, that would be as close as the Titans would get as Wright State broke the game open in the seventh inning with four runs on six hits for the eventual 10-2 win.

In the first game, Detroit had trouble mounting any offense against WSU junior pitcher Sharon Palma who was on top of her game recording four scoreless innings allowing only one Titan hit by Nortman to pick up the win.

Consequently, Wright State's offense jumped out to a quick start and never looked back posting six runs on eight hits over the first three innings en route to the 9-0 victory.

The Raiders were led by junior Kristen Bradshaw who hit 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

The Titans and Raiders will play the series finale Sunday, April 19 at 12 p.m. at Buysse Ballpark.
