Track And Field Lands 10 More For 2010

UDM Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Guy Murray announced the addition of 10 student-athletes for the upcoming 2010 season. The group consists of six women, one of whom will also run cross country, and four men.

“This is a talented class that will help us improve in some of our weak areas as well as add depth to our stronger units,” said Murray.

Joining the men's team are Vince LeFler (Midland, MI/Midland), Ja'Quan Patterson (Ypsilanti, MI/Ypsilanti), Joseph Raffin (Valparaiso, IN/Chesterton) and Jeffrey Senecal (North Baltimore, OH/North Baltimore).

LeFler was a Michigan Division 1 regional champion in the 300-meter hurdles, while also qualifying for the state championships as a junior and senior.

Patterson earned runner-up in the long jump as a senior and was a member of the fifth place 4x400-meter relay at the Division 2 championships. He was also the regional champion in the long jump and placed seventh in the state championships.

Raffin was a 400-meters sectional champion in 2008 and 2009 and closed out his high school career running on the third-place 4x400m, while Senecal was an Ohio Division 3 regional scorer as a junior and senior in the high jump as well as a regional qualifier as a senior in the long jump.

On the women's side, Tressanique Hampton (Flint, MI/Southwestern Academy), Whitney Rogers (Flint, MI/Hamady), Olivia Smid (Ann Arbor, MI/Whitmore Lake), Brianna Soule (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven), Sharonda Vesey (Westland, MI/Romulus) and Melissa Zuteck (Sterling Heights, MI/Sterling Heights) will all run for Detroit.

Hampton will see double duty for UDM as she will also compete on the cross country team. She earned two regional championships in the 800m and the 4x400m in 2009, while helping the 4x400m take fourth at the Michigan Division 1 championships for the second straight season. She also scored in the state meet in the 800m as a junior.

Rogers was the Division 3 long jump champion in 2008 and ran on the 4x400m that took fourth that year and improved to second in 2009.

Smid finished seventh in the Division 3 300mh as a senior as well as tied for seventh in the high jump as a junior. She was also a high jump qualifier in 2009 and a 300mh qualifier in 2008, while Soule earned fourth in the long jump in 2009 at the Division 1 meet.

Vesey was a Michigan Division 1 100mh qualifier and a 300mh regional scorer in 2009 and ran on the fifth place 4x400m and scored in the regionals in 2008, while Zuteck was a regional scorer at Division 1 in the 400m in her final two seasons as well as a regional scorer in the 200m as a junior and a state qualifier as a senior.

With the latest 10-member recruiting class, the Titans will have 21 incoming freshmen on the track and field team when school starts, with eight on the men's team and 13 on the women's squad.
