INDIANAPOLIS (3/20/2026) -- University of Detroit Mercy track and field junior Joshua Neary was honored for his great character as he was named the 2026 Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Sportsmanship Award winner.

The Sportsmanship Award recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Sportsmanship is defined as behavior exhibited during competition by student-athletes based on values, respect, and integrity.

Neary has been an outstanding teammate since he arrived on campus, and his attitude has always come across to his teammates in practice and opponents in meets. He always talks to other competitors at meets in a positive manner and congratulates them on their efforts. Even when not competing, he has traveled to cross country meets to support his teammates and others. 

He continues a great legacy of Titans who have displayed their outstanding sportsmanship in competition, joining Claire Hunt (2025 Cross Country), Drew Pierson  (2025 Men's Soccer), Nina Pizzo (2025 Indoor Track), Allison Sherman (2023 Cross Country & 2024 Indoor Track), and Oscar Hernandez (2024 Indoor Track).
