Senior Rachel McHenry led the way for UDM as the Titan women's golfers finished 13th Tuesday at the University of Cincinnati Fall Classic.
Returning to the Detroit lineup this fall after redshirting last season, McHenry posted rounds of 88, 81 and 78 to share 44th place (247) in the 81-player field. Fellow senior Alex Aversa was right behind (83-82-83-248) in the tournament contested at Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, OH
Participating as an individual rather than in UDM's starting five, sophomore Jackie DeMarco actually posted the lowest numbers for Detroit with a 78-83-81-242 score card, good enough for a 31st-place showing.
As a team, UDM opened the tournament in 12th place after Monday's first 18 holes with a 345 tally and stayed there as the second round – suspended due to darkness and finished Tuesday morning – concluded, despite improving to 324. The Titans shot 330 for their final round to finish just eight shots behind 12th place Evansville. Host Cincinnati won the event in a tie-breaker over Morehead State.
“Our players never lost focus and fought back all the way through the tournament. That was good to see,” coach Terri Anthony-Ryan said. “I was very happy with both our seniors. They were very steady. It was good to see the fire in Rachel's eyes. She's getting her game back and she improved with each round.”
The Titans will return to action Oct. 5-6, making their first-ever appearance at the University of Akron's Zippy Invitational.
