Led by freshman Alexandria Vintevoghel (Casco, MI/Marine City), the UDM women's cross country team had four runners place in the top 20 as Detroit opened the 2009 season with the 5k Golden Grizzly Open on Saturday. The non-team scoring event was held on the campus of Oakland University.

The rookie Vintevoghel led the Titans with a time of 19:39, finishing in eighth place.

“Alexandria ran a very nice race and great for her to debut as our No. 1,” said head coach Guy Murray. “She was a front runner in high school and she will do well working with Kristie (Ferrans) up front for us.”

Ferrans (Carleton, MI/Monroe) began her junior season placing 12th in 20:03, while sophomore Stephanie Rossman (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia) was 17th in 20:14, nearly a minute better then her debut in 2008.

Freshman Katrina Oberski (Clyde, MI/Port Huron) willed her way into the top 20 in her first collegiate race, taking the final spot in 20:24.

Sophomore Kirstin Mooney (Stirling, ON/St. Theresa Catholic) was the fifth Titan with a run of 20:29, good for 22nd place, while senior Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) earned 25th in 20:44.

Rounding out the Titan squad was sophomore Kristina Arko (Euclid, OH/Euclid) (31st - 21:03), and freshmen Sarah Martinez (Grand Blanc, MI/Flint Powers) (33rd- 21:34) and Katie Weishaar (Plymouth, MI/Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard) (55th- 24:10).

“It was a great start for us,” said Murray. “We showed significant improvement right away as we expected.”

UDM returns to action next weekend as the Titans host the 23rd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational at Cass Benton Park in Northville. More information about the event can be seen by clicking here.
