KETTERING, Ohio -- On the strength of four golfers finishing in the top 20, the Detroit women's golf team posted its best 18-hole score of the season to rally past four schools and earn runner-up honors at the Dayton Fall Invitational on Tuesday.
UDM shot a 305 in second round, the third best mark in the two-day tournament, to finish with a 614 total on the North Course at the NCR Country Club. Detroit finished ahead of two Horizon League schools in Green Bay and Youngstown State, while also passing Robert Morris and host Dayton.
“We played well, but we all felt like we left some shots out there,” said 2010 HL Coach of the Year
Terri-Anthony Ryan. “We did a good job in moving up to second when we are not really at full strength yet.”
Senior
Alainna Stefan (Dearborn, MI/Mercy) carded a 4-over 74 on the day to finish in a three-way tie for sixth with a 152. Freshman
Lindsey Lammers (Milan, MI/Milan) also shared sixth as she showcased a six-stroke improvement from round one, ending the final 18 with a 3-over 73.
Sophomore
Collette Hansen (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) tied for 15th with a 156 (74, 82), while rookie
Christina Thorne (Kingston, ON/Bayridge) tallied a 159, including a second-round 6-over 76.
“The freshmen really stepped up for us and Colette has been playing extremely well,” said Ryan. “Even Marni (Achterhoff) who has been struggling with an injury came on strong in the last 11 holes playing three over.”
The team will have one last event left on the fall docket as the red, white and blue travels to Greenville, S.C., to play in the Annual Lady Paladin Invitational on Oct. 29-31. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Furman University Golf Course.
