Sophomore
John Nowicki (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle Collegiate) and freshman
Chris Nemes (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central) each netted two goals, but it was not enough as a second-half Robert Morris run was the difference in a 15-6 setback on Saturday in Moon Township, Pa.
“We still have yet to put together a full game,” said head coach
Matt Holtz. “The first half was probably the best first half we have played here as a program. We just kind of let it go after that and they capitalized on a few of our penalties and mistakes.”
The Titans (0-4) trailed early as RMU (5-0) got on the board first nearly five minutes into the contest. Halfway through the first, though, the Titans tied it up as Nowicki took a feed from freshman
Tyler Staruch (Brighton, MI/Brighton) and put it past the goalkeeper.
Detroit saw the Colonials score the next two, but would tie it up early in the second as freshman
Joel Matthews (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary) notched his 13th goal of the year off a great assist from freshman
Mike Fields (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake). Just two minutes later, junior
Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) broke the defense down and beat the keeper to knot it at 3.
RMU would regain a two-goal advantage at the half 6-4, with Nemes tallying the fourth Titan marker with four minutes to go in the second.
The third quarter saw Detroit get within one as the Titans scored first coming out of the locker room. Nowicki cut across the middle and took a pass from sophomore
Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline), stationed behind the net, and fired it on goal at the 11:12 mark.
From there, the Colonials, who defeated nationally-ranked Ohio State earlier in the week, scored the next four in the third period to race out in front. Nemes got the Titans' last marker in the fourth, but RMU ended the contest on a 5-0 run to take the victory.
Freshman face-off man
Brandon Davenport (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/GP North) did an outstanding job in the circle winning 16-of-24 face-offs on the day, while also collecting a team-high seven groundballs. Freshman
Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary) had five groundballs and three caused turnovers and Matthews added four GB's and three caused turnovers.
“Brandon did a phenomenal job,” said Holtz. “He was the player of the game for us. We usually rotate out if we get two losses in a row, but he never did that today.”
Detroit will stay in the Keystone State where the red, white and blue will face Lehigh on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
