The University of Detroit Mercy softball team took three shots at topping Wright State on Saturday, but the Titans struggled to produce offensively and suffered three losses on their first day of Horizon League play.

The third game of the weekend series, originally scheduled for noon on Sunday, was played immediately following the conclusion of Saturday's doubleheader in an attempt to keep weather from cutting the three-game set short.

UDM (2-11, 0-3 Horizon League) was held scoreless by the Raiders, who used big innings in each of the first two games to pull away. In game one, Wright State (11-15, 3-0 Horizon League) put up six runs in the third inning en route to a 13-0, five inning win. Then, in game two, WSU claimed a 17-0 victory in five innings thanks to an 11-run fourth inning and, with all the momentum in their dugout, the Raiders notched a 10-0, five inning win in the final game.

Senior center fielder Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Unionville-Sebewaing Area) led the Titans with two hits Saturday. Senior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) and sophomores Rachel Copple (Dearborn Hts., MI/Allen Park Cabrini) and Kara Spinelli (Newman, CA/Orestimba) each recorded one hit. For Mulory, playing her first season of softball for the Titans after starring for the women's basketball team this winter, it was her first career hit.

With no game left to play on Sunday, the Titans will return to action Wednesday afternoon as they trek to Ypsilanti for a doubleheader with Eastern Michigan.
