Early Errors Costly for Detroit in Losses to YSU

Detroit vs. Youngstown State Game 1 Stats

Detroit vs. Youngstown State Game 2 Stats

In Wednesday's doubleheader with Youngstown State the UDM softball team made a combined four first-inning errors that led to 14 unearned runs for the Penguins, 10 in game one and four in game two, as the Titans fell into early holes in a pair of five inning losses.

Freshman Anna Bondy (Newport, MI/Carleton-Airport) was in the circle for Detroit (2-24, 0-14 Horizon League) in the day's first game and the opening frame was a rocky one. Youngstown (11-22, 4-4 Horizon League) put up all 14 of its runs in the contest in the first, recording nine hits during the inning which was extended by three Titan errors.

But Bondy and the Detroit defense settled down, and allowed the Penguins just five hits and no runs over the next four innings. However, the Titans offense was unable to capitalize on some key scoring opportunities and overcome the large deficit. In the bottom of the first inning, after sophomore third baseman Rachel Zaccagni (Macomb, MI/Dakota) drew a one-out walk, a YSU error on ball hit by senior center fielder Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Unionville-Sebewaing Area) gave the Titans runners at first and second with just one out, yet they were unable to get a run across the plate.

UDM scored its lone run of game one in the second inning. Following a one-out double from freshman right fielder Katie Schaus (Unionville, MI/Unionville-Sebewaing Area), senior left fielder Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) and junior designated player Stefanie Morong (Ludington, MI/Mason County Central) drew walks to load the bases. Then, with two outs, Zaccagni singled up the middle to plate Schaus and chip into the YSU lead. But that was all the offense the Titans could muster as they stranded eight runners on base and the Penguins came out on top in the opener, 14-1.

Game two got off to a similar start, this time with sophomore Kara Spinelli (Newman, CA/Orestimba) in the circle for Detroit. With two runs already in, Spinelli coaxed YSU left fielder Autumn Grove to hit a groundball to second base, but a Titan error kept the inning alive, and the Penguins would add four more runs to the board before the home team would get a chance to bat.

Detroit finally answered in the third as Houthoofd singled up the middle to drive in Morong who had started the inning off by hitting her first triple in a Titan uniform, a long drive to the fence in right-center field. UDM added another in the bottom of the fourth, though the Penguins had already added three more in the top of the inning. Mulroy led the frame off with a single up the middle, then made it all the way around to score her first career run on a double to left from sophomore second baseman Melissa Barrett (Taylor, MI/Kennedy). But, Youngstown State once again had an answer, and put up two runs in the fifth on three extra-base hits to cap off an 11-2 victory.

Morong led the Titans at the dish Wednesday, tallying two hits and two walks and scoring a run for the Titans. Mulroy also drew a pair of free passes in the doubleheader.

Both teams will return to Buysse Ballpark Thursday afternoon for the final game of the series. First-pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., and you can check out live stats via Gametracker here.
