Golf Stat Final Score
Junior
Alainna Stefan (Dearborn, MI/Mercy) took home medalist honors and the Detroit Titans women's golf team is heading to its first ever NCAA Regional after winning the Horizon League Championship on Sunday afternoon at Kearney Hill Links in Lexington, KY.
“It is great to know that we are the first team from the Horizon League to go to the NCAA's,” said head coach
Terri-Anthony Ryan, who was honored as the league's Coach of the Year. “Everyone contributed this weekend as we used everyone's score at least once. We had great leadership from our seniors and two juniors really stepped up when we needed them.”
The Titans finished the rainy weekend with a 943 (300-324-319), taking the lead back from Youngstown State, who briefly went in front in the second round but finished nine strokes behind with a 952 (312-314-326).
Stefan, who was also named first team All-Horizon League, won the event carding a 226 (73-77-76), three strokes ahead of junior teammate
Marni Achterhoff (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores), who posted a 229 (72-81-76). That Titan pair also made the All-Tournament team.
Freshman
Collette Hansen (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) took 15th with a three-day score of 247 (76-85-86). Seniors
Rachel McHenry (Livonia, MI/Stevenson) (252) and
Alex Aversa (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) (253) rounded out the Titans' line-up with top 20 efforts at 19th and 20, respectively.
“The weather was not ideal, but this team did not let that bother them,” said Ryan. “They were focused and nothing else mattered other than winning.”
The NCAA Regional will take place from May 6-8 with the regional field being announced on Monday afternoon.
